🐢 Tortoise vs. Turtle: What’s the Difference?
By One Love Animal Rescue
Keywords: tortoise vs turtle, red-footed tortoise, exotic pet adoption, turtle care, tortoise rescue
When people hear the word tortoise, they often picture a slow, dome-shelled creature sunning itself on dry land. Say turtle, and it’s a sleek swimmer paddling through water. But how different are they really?
At One Love Animal Rescue, we’ve rescued both tortoises and turtles—and we’re here to clear up the confusion once and for all!
🐢 Key Differences Between Tortoises and Turtles
1. Habitat
-
Tortoises live on land and rarely (if ever) swim.
-
Turtles are typically aquatic or semi-aquatic, thriving in ponds, rivers, and even oceans.
👉 Quick tip: If you see a shelled reptile basking in your backyard, it’s likely a tortoise—not a turtle.
2. Shell Shape
-
Tortoises have dome-shaped, heavy shells designed for protection on land.
-
Turtles have flatter, streamlined shells that help them glide through water with ease.
3. Feet & Legs
-
Tortoises have sturdy, elephant-like legs built for walking on dry ground.
-
Turtles have webbed feet or flippers for swimming.
4. Diet
-
Tortoises are mostly herbivores—enjoying leafy greens, flowers, and fruit.
-
Turtles are omnivores, often eating insects, fish, and aquatic plants.
🌿 Meet One of Our Favorite Tortoises: The Red-Footed Tortoise
One Love is home to several rescued Red-Footed Tortoises—a colorful species native to South America. These beautiful reptiles have red or orange markings on their legs and a gentle, curious nature that makes them popular exotic pets.
But they come with serious care needs: specific humidity, temperature control, and a proper diet. Sadly, many are surrendered or abandoned because people didn’t realize how much commitment they require.
