One Love helps all kinds of domestic animals and that variety is what we think makes us special. While we love animals of all species, sizes, shapes and colors, cats have always been our bread and butter. That is not because we like cats more than other animals (shh don’t tell the cats that), it’s because the need for cat rescue is the greatest in our Southern California community.
Because cats are allowed to be free roaming and there simply aren’t enough affordable and timely options for spay/neuter for the public who want to help them, cats end up living, reproducing and inevitably suffering in the streets. It is estimated that there are over 3 million unowned community cats in Southern California.
Our rescue is frequently taking in cats who have lived on the streets, most of whom are sick when they find their way to us (upper respiratory infections, ringworm, parasites, you name it…). We receive hundreds of requests daily for help placing unwanted “stray” cats that wandered into someone’s yard and had kittens or that are living in unsafe business areas. We do our best to help all the ones we can, but it breaks our heart when we need to say no due to space constraints (lack of foster homes) or resources (time and funding).
Sadly, the simple fact is there just are not as many cat homes in our area as there are cats in need of rescue.
While we are continuing our efforts to rescue as many of these kitties as we can and get them off the streets and into loving homes, we are always working on ways to improve our operation and grow our impact in our community. Looking at the problem in a more proactive vs reactive way is where our new mobile clinic concept comes in. We would like to start a low cost, mobile spay and neuter clinic to support the efforts of other rescues, TNR groups and cat advocates in our area as we all work together to help our community kitties. The goal is to reduce the population of cats suffering in the streets through spay and neuter and to generally improve access to affordable vet care in our area.
We have a business plan and a wonderful team ready to move on making this project a reality, we just need the space! Here is a sneak peek at the layout and plan for the mobile truck we are hoping to purchase to start this new project.
We expect the truck to cost around $250k with the interior build out from La Boit so we can’t do this without your support! We are hoping to raise at least $25k by January to make the down payment.
Will you help us make this goal a reality so we can continue to expand our impact on the animals in our community who need us most?
